Hugh Campbell each tallied a hat trick to help lift Lehman to a 7-3 victory over the College of Staten Island, in a key CUNY Athletic Conference contest on the South Field, on Wednesday evening. The Lightning have now won three matches in a row while the Dolphins were handed their first conference loss of the season.
Campbell (Bronx, N.Y./Evander Childs) got the scoring started early by taking a feed from Aluyi and putting the ball into the net on a header to give the Lightning (4-7, 2-2 CUNYAC) a 1-0 lead, 7:15 into the match. Aluyi forced a turnover and used his speed to move down the field and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one for Lehman's second goal of the match, just 16 seconds later.
Campbell tallied his second goal of the evening by receiving the ball from freshman forward
Gentian Muhaxheri (Bronx, N.Y./Bedri Pejani, Kosovo) and rifling it past the goalkeeper to give Lehman a 3-0 advantage with 27:22 remaining in the opening half. Less than five minutes later, Muhaxheri guided the ball through a sea of Dolphins' (6-8-1, 3-1 CUNYAC) defenders to Aluyi who went on another breakaway and once again muscled the ball past Staten Island's goalkeeper, giving Lehman a 4-0 lead going into halftime.
After the Dolphins cut Lehman's advantage to 4-1, Campbell setup Aluyi who completed the hat trick, and scored his 12
th goal of the season, on a rocket from 15-yards out to help Lehman regain its four-goal advantage, with less than 25 minutes remaining. Just over two minutes later, Aluyi fed Campbell who scorched the ball into the back of the cage for a hat trick of his own and extending Lehman's lead to 6-1. Ronniel Mendez (New York, N.Y./Miami Southridge) capped off Lehman's scoring by connecting for his sixth goal of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jesus Marin (East Harlem, N.Y./Manhattan Village Academy) made 11 saves to earn his fourth victory of the season. Aluyi and Muhaxheri each picked up two assists. Campbell added an assist and now has eight goals for the season.
Lehman will be back in action on Saturday for a key CUNY Athletic Conference match against CCNY, at Randall's Island, at 9:30 a.m. Lehman is currently in a three-way tie with CCNY and Brooklyn for fourth place in the latest CUNYAC standings.
