PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team dropped both games to the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon. The Lightning fell, 8-2, in the opening game and the Dolphins won Game Two by a score of 9-2.
In the opener, Lehman trailed, 4-0, before getting on the board. In the top of the fifth, junior catcher Jaime Maldonado (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe) doubled to right field, moving junior first basemen Carlos Alcantara (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) to third. After a balk scored Alcantara, senior second basemen Waldo Acosta (New York, N.Y./Bread and Roses) reached on an infield error, scoring Maldonado.
Mount Saint Vincent responded with four more runs in the bottom half of the inning, for the 8-2 win.
Junior pitcher Wilfredo Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond for Boys) took the loss, giving up four runs, two of them earned, in four innings pitched and he struck out three opposing hitters.
In the second contest between these two teams, the Lightning (1-5) had a rough fourth inning, as the Dolphins (2-6) scored seven runs during to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
Lehman got two of those runs back in the top of the fifth, when junior shortstop Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) doubled to right center, scoring Maldonado and freshman outfielder Socrates Arevalo (Bronx, N.Y./South Bronx).
Freshman pitcher Francisco Pena (New York, N.Y./Landmark) took the loss for the Lightning, yielding the first five runs.
These two teams will meet again for a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, this time at Lehman's South Field. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
