Baseball Drops Season Opening Doubleheader to Purchase

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Lehman College baseball team opened the 2014 campaign on Saturday afternoon, and dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Purchase College, 5-3, and 12-0. The games were Lehman home games, held on the turf at Stevens Tech. The doubleheader was the first game action for both squads.

In the opener, Lehman (0-2) junior pitcher Wilfredo Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) worked in and out of trouble, yielding four runs on four hits through 5.0 innings. Purchase (2-0) built a 5-1 lead before the Lightning tallied single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings.

Leadoff hitter Kevin Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) scored twice, as classmate Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) had Lehman's sole RBI.

In Game Two, Purchase got three runs in the top of the second inning to take an early lead. In the bottom half of the frame, the Lightning loaded the bases with one out, but could not push a run across. The Panthers then got three more runs in the third inning, and went on to the victory. Junior short stop Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) and junior first baseman Carlos Alcantara (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) had back-to-back singles in that second inning, while Michael Liang had Lehman's only other hit in the game.

The Lightning will again head to New Jersey for its next game, on Tuesday, against Bard College at Diamond Nation, in Flemington.
