Box Score 2 NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team salvaged a split in a doubleheader against CCNY, in a vital CUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader, on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers won the first game, 4-2, while the Lightning countered with a narrow 7-6 victory in Game Two.
In the first game, Lehman (3-16, 1-5 CUNYAC) capitalized on two CCNY miscues. Senior outfielder Kevin Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1. After the Beavers scored a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead, senior second baseman Waldo Acosta (New York, N.Y./Bread and Roses) scored on a passed ball, in the top of the fourth inning.
Junior pitcher Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) pitched a complete game, but took the loss, as he gave up three earned runs on three hits, while striking out eight batters.
In the second game, the Lightning rallied, scoring three runs in the third inning, and another three in the fifth, to take a 6-0 lead. CCNY rallied to plate three in the fifth, and three more in the sixth, to knot the game at six runs apiece.
In the top of the seventh, junior outfielder Tom Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) earned a walk, then stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. With two outs, junior catcher Jaime Maldonado (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe) provided the heroics, as he punched a single to right field to score Liang with the eventual game-winning run.
Senior closer Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) struck out the first two batters he faced in the seventh inning, en route to his first save of the season. Sophomore pitcher Ja'Von Collins (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlon) picked up the victory in relief, running his record to 2-0.
The two teams will play the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday, on Lehman College's South Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
