Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – Behind the brilliant pitching of junior Justin Moises, the Lehman College baseball team beat City College on Sunday, 14-1, and won the final two games of the three-game series. Moises threw 8.2 innings, scattering seven hits while fanning eight batters to earn his first victory of the season.
Junior catcher Jaime Maldonado (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe) lead the offense for Lehman (4-16), by belting two home runs and tallying three RBI. The first round-tripper came with a runner on base in the bottom of the third, while his second was a solo blast to right center field in the bottom of the sixth.
The Lightning scored in five consecutive innings, beginning with a four-run second inning. The big blow of that inning was senior outfielder Socrates Peralta's (Santo Domingo, D.R./Morris) two-run single that gave Lehman a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning, Peralta and senior outfielder Kevin Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) were on the corners, and executed a double steal, with Hernandez scoring without a throw.
Peralta continued his hot hitting as he added an RBI double in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth, his fourth RBI of the day, in the fifth to help Lehman pull away.
Senior second baseman Waldo Acosta (New York, N.Y./Bread and Roses) and junior first baseman Danny Rodriguez (New York, N.Y./Pennsbury) each had an RBI double. Rodriguez drove in his second run of the game on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth inning. Senior outfielder Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) produced an RBI single of his own, in the bottom of the fourth.
Moises (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) cruised through the first eight innings, giving up no runs. In the top of the ninth, Moises was able to get the first two outs, but CCNY (7-8-1) spoiled his shutout bid, plating their only run of the game on an RBI single. Freshman pitcher Joel Duran (New York, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) came in in relief and struck out the final batter to end the game.
Lehman will return to the South Field on Wednesday, April 16, for a non-conference matchup with the College at Old Westbury. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
