BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday with host St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn, in games played at MCU Park on Coney Island. Behind masterful pitching, the Lightning won Game One, 2-0, before dropping the back end, 10-9.

In the opener, three Lehman pitchers combined to hold the Bears to just one base hit – an infield squib with two out in the seventh inning.

Junior Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) started and went the first three innings. His replacement, senior Aneudi Garcia (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center), earned the win by going the next three innings, before senior Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) earned the save by throwing the seventh and final inning.

Lehman scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, which were more than enough. In the fourth, senior Kevin Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) doubled to leadoff the inning, then came around to score on a single by junior Tom Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center). In the fifth inning, a Hernandez single plated freshman Miguel Melendez (Bronx, N.Y./Astor Collegiate).

In the second game, the Lightning exploded for a six-run fifth inning as the Lightning batted around. The first five batters in the inning all had base hits, including a Hernandez RBI double. Lehman would score three more runs, to knot the game at 9-9, in the sixth inning, highlighted by an RBI double by junior first baseman Carlos Alcantara (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders). But the Bears managed to push across the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, to earn the win.

Up next, Lehman will host Stevens on Wednesday evening, in the final CUNYAC doubleheader of the schedule. Prior to the games, around 4:45 p.m., Lehman will honor the team's seniors, who are playing their final CUNYAC games on the South Field.
