Collins Earns First College Win as Baseball Hammers John Jay, 12-2

BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning en route to a 12-2 non-conference victory over John Jay Collegeon Sunday afternoon. Sophomore pitcher Ja'Von Collins earned the victory in relief, throwing the final three innings.

The Lightning held a 4-2 lead heading in the middle of the eighth. With runners on the corners and nobody out, senior pinch hitter Kevin Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) singled to right field, scoring junior outfielder Tom Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) to extend Lehman's lead to 5-2. With Lehman up 6-2, and the bases loaded with one out, junior first baseman Carlos Alcantara (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) grinded out an infield single, scoring Hernandez, as everyone else advanced a base. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Tom Liang, who singled to right field to clear the bases and give Lehman a commanding 11-2 lead.

Junior pitcher Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) started the game for the Lightning and was lights out, fanning 11 hitters and only giving up one earned run in six innings pitched. Collins (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlon) went three shutout innings, only giving up one hit, and striking out five to earn the win.

Freshman infielder Jason Laguna (Thiells, N.Y./North Rockland) tallied an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth , and senior outfielder Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) connected on a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh.

The Lightning will return to the South Field on Tuesday, April 8, hosting Drew University in another non-conference game. The first pitch will be thrown at 5:00 p.m.
