Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. – The #3 Lehman College women's volleyball team fell to the host #2 Hunter College in straight sets, in the CUNYAC Semifinals on Friday afternoon. Set scores were 27-25, 25-21, and 25-10. As a result, the Lightning have been eliminated from the CUNYAC Championships, while the Hawks will play in the CUNYAC Championship match. Jo-Marie Aquino was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Lehman came out strong in the first set by scoring the first four points. With the opening stanza tied at 13, Aquino slammed home a kill to help Lehman regain the lead. With Lehman down 18-17, Aquino tallied back-to-back kills to catapult the Blue and Gold back in the lead. Lehman had a set-point opportunity, up 24-21. Hunter scored the next four points to take a 25-24 lead. Lehman was able to tie it up at 25, but then the Hawks scored the next two points to take the first set, 27-25.
In the second set, it was the Hawks' turn to come out strong by scoring the set's first four points. The Lightning struck back by scoring the next three points to pull within 4-3. After Hunter extended its lead to 7-3, Aquino slammed home a kill to narrow Lehman's deficit to 7-4. Later in the set, junior opposite hitter
Salveira Gonzalez produced a service ace to decrease Lehman's deficit to 14-8. The Lightning's run would continue as they were able to close the gap to 16-13. Gonzalez slammed home a kill to pull Lehman within four, at 20-16. Sophomore outside hitter
Lindsay Pantaleon tallied a kill to make it a 20-18 set. Hunter would eventually pull away to win the stanza, 25-21, and put Lehman on the brink.
In the third set, the Hawks got off to another strong start by taking a 9-0 lead. The Lightning were not able gain any momentum as Hunter went on to win the set, 25-10, to clinch a berth in the CUNYAC Finals.
Aquino led the way for the Lightning with 17 kills, while senior setter
Imani Dubois produced 23 assists. Freshman middle blocker
Yzaira Galan scored two service aces, while sophomore outside hitter
Monique Young had three blocks. Pantaleon helped anchor the defense with nine digs, while sophomore
Lizette Medina produced eight digs. Gonzalez added seven digs of her own.
