CUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships Highlight Busy Weekend

BRONX, N.Y. – It is a busy weekend as both indoor track and field teams, as well as the men's volleyball team, will be in action.

On Saturday, the men's volleyball team will host Sarah Lawrence College in a non-conference match, at 12:00 p.m., in the APEX Auxiliary Gym. There will be no live steaming video for the match. However, there will be live stats available at this link. Be sure to print out the game program as well.

The Lightning will be led by junior Jaleel Lino (Punta Gorda, Belize/Toledo Community College) and freshman Jose Bautista (Bronx, N.Y./H.S. of World Cultures). Lino is the reigning two-time CUNY Athletic Conference Player of the Week, while Bautista earned the conference's Libero of the Week honors for the third time this season.

On Sunday, the indoor track and field teams will be competing in the CUNY Athletic Conference Championships, at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory, beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Last year at the Championships, the women placed fifth with 42 team points, while the men finished in fourth place with 66 points.

The nationally ranked #6 women's team will be led by sophomore Adriana Wright (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica/Manchester)) and junior Allie Bernasconi (Beacon, N.Y./John Jay). Wright currently holds the #1 time in the nation in both the 60 meter dash, and the 60 meter hurdles. She ran the 60 meter dash, with a time of 7.67 seconds, at the Molloy Lions Invitational, earlier this season. She completed the 60 meter hurdles in 8.60, at the Gotham Cup, back in January. Bernasconi currently has the country's best time in the 400 meter dash, running the race in 56.67, at the CTC Championships, on February 8.

On the men's side, sophomore John Pollina (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) will look to have another strong performance, as he was named the Most Valuable Performer at last year's Championships. He scored 28 points, the most points out of every male competitor. Pollina took home two gold medals, in the one mile run (4:36.04), and the 5000 meters (16:49.36). He narrowly missed a third, as he was out-leaned in the 800 meter run, with a time of 2:01.39, just .02 seconds behind the winner. Junior Pierre Francois (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) will look to have another successful performance at the CUNYAC Championships. Last year, he finished second in the long jump, with a leap of 6.32 meters, while in the triple jump, he claimed gold, with a distance of 14.41 meters.
