Baseball Earns Weekend Sweep Over John Jay

Box Score
BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team completed the three-game sweep over John Jay by winning a non-conference game, 17-8, on the South Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Lightning were led by freshman third baseman Christopher Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman H.S.), who went 6-6, with five runs batted in, and scored one run. His six hits for the game were just two shy of tying an NCAA Divsion III record, set by Mike Murphy of Misericordia University in 2009.

On the mound, sophomore pitcher Francisco Pena (New York, N.Y./Landmark) started and earned the victory, giving up just one earned run, while recording three strikeouts, in five innings pitched.

The Lightning (5-10) scored nine runs in the top of the second inning to take control of the game. Senior designated hitter Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunder) produced an RBI single and an RBI double in the frame. Sophomore second baseman Thomas Montilli (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) bunted for a run-scoring single, with the bases loaded, while senior shortstop Jhon Comas (Yonkers, N.Y./Gregorio Luperon) drove in two runs on a base hit. During the inning, senior first baseman Carlos Alcantara (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) and freshman outfielder Miguel Rodriguez (Santiago, D.R./H.S. of World Cultures) each produced an RBI base hit, while senior outfielder Danny Rodriguez (New York, N.Y./Pennbury) produced a two-run single.

The Lightning were able to build their lead in the top of the third, as Lopez continued his productive day with a two-run single to extend Lehman's advantage to 12-1. Freshman outfielder Carlo Francisco (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) drew a walk with the bases loaded to tack on another run for the Lightning. Also in the frame, Comas drove in his third run on a single.

Lopez struck again in the top of the fourth, driving in two more runs on a single, to put Lehman up 15-1. He added an RBI single in the sixth inning, for his sixth hit in as many at-bats, and his fifth run batted in of the afternoon.

For the game, Alcantara produced three hits, scored once, and drove in a runner. Danny Rodriguez scored five runs, on four singles, and had two RBI. Montilli crossed the plate three times, on two hits, and drove in a run.

Junior pitcher Matthew Brown (Astoria, N.Y./Holy Cross) pitched four innings in relief, giving up three earned runs, and striking out one batter.

The Lightning will travel up to Purchase, N.Y., to battle the Valiants of Manhattanville, on Tuesday. The first pitch will be thrown at 4:00 p.m.
