BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team earned two key CUNY Athletic Conference victories over John Jay, on Saturday afternoon, on the South Field. Lehman took Game One, 16-3, while winning the second game, 14-3.

For the afternoon, the Lightning hit eight home runs. Three of those homers were hit by senior first baseman Carlos Alcantara (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders).

In the opening game, Alcantara drilled a three-run home run to left field, to help Lehman jump out to a 5-2 lead, in the bottom of the third. One batter later, classmate Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) belted a solo home run to put the Lightning up by four.

In the home half of the fifth, freshman third baseman Christopher Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman H.S.) and Alcantara produced back-to-back solo home runs to put Lehman up 8-2. Later in the inning, senior shortstop Jhon Comas (Yonkers, N.Y./Gregorio Luperon) produced a three-run homer to extend Lehman's lead to 13-2.

The Lightning went on to win, 16-3.

On the mound, Smith earned the complete game victory, giving up just two earned runs and striking out 10 batters.

Sophomore second baseman Thomas Montilli (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) added an RBI single, while sophomore catcher Matthew Prevosti (Staten Island, N.Y./CSI H.S) produced a run-scoring ground rule double.

In the second game, the Lightning (4-10, 2-2 CUNYAC) and Bloodhounds (0-16, 0-6 CUNYAC) were engaged in a tight pitchers' duel early. Lehman's bats came back to life in the home half of the third, as the Lightning produced three home runs in the frame. Freshman outfielder Miguel Rodriguez (Santiago, D.R./H.S. of World Cultures) kicked off Lehman's power surge, by hitting a grand slam to give the Lightning a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning, Alcantara crushed his third home run of the afternoon, a two-run shot to extend Lehman's lead to 6-0. Freshman outfielder Carlo Francisco (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) put a cap on Lehman's big inning by drilling a two-run round-tripper of his own, to make it 8-0.

Lopez drilled his second home run of the afternoon, a three-run shot in the bottom of the sixth, to give Lehman a 13-1 advantage. The Lightning ended up winning the game, 14-3.

For the contest, Comas and Prevosti each picked up a run batted in, while Francisco produced a run-scoring single.

On the mound, junior pitcher Ja'von Collins (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlon) earned a complete game victory, giving up just one earned run, while fanning eight hitters.

Lehman will conclude the three-game set against John Jay, with a non-conference contest on the South Field, on Sunday afternoon. The Lightning will be the away team, as the first pitch will be thrown at noon.
