Box Score PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team ran its winning streak to five consecutive games with a stirring 9-7 defeat of host St. Joseph's College of Long Island on Wednesday evening. Trailing 6-4, the Lightning scored three runs in the seventh, and twice more in the eighth, to earn the come-from-behind victory.
The Lightning (7-10) got single runs in the second and third innings in support of starting pitcher
Matthew Brown (Astoria, N.Y./Holy Cross), who earned his first win of the season. Brown went 8.2 innings, striking out six. Junior
Ja'Von Collins (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlon) earned the save, getting the final out of the game.
Trailing 3-2 in the sixth inning, sophomore catcher
Matthew Prevosti (Staten Island, N.Y./CSIHS) banged his first career homerun, a two-run shot, to put Lehman back in front. But SJC (13-11) scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, retaking the lead.
In the seventh inning, senior
Carlos Alcantara (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) batted with the bases loaded, and belted a two RBI single to tie the score. Classmate
Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) scored the game-winning run later that inning, on an SJC error. Lehman added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth for the final.
On the day, Alcantara had three total hits, while Prevosti, senior shortstop
Jhon Comas (Yonkers, N.Y./Gregorio Luperon), and sophomore outfielder
Socrates Arevalo (Bronx, N.Y./South Bronx) each added two.
Lehman now prepares for a vital doubleheader on Saturday with CUNYAC rival City College.
