Box Score 2 BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team settled for a split against Baruch, in a CUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader, on the South Field on Saturday afternoon. The Lightning won the first game, 8-5, but Baruch was able to withstand Lehman's rally to win Game Two, 14-13, in extra innings.
In Game One, senior pitcher
Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) earned a complete game victory, giving up five earned runs on six hits, while striking out 10 batters in seven innings pitched.
Lehman blew the game open early, by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning, all with two outs. Smith provided the big blow, with the bases loaded, by drilling a bases-clearing double to right field, to put the Lightning up 3-0. The next batter was freshman outfielder
Carlo Francisco (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers), who scorched a double of his own to score Smith and extend Lehman's lead to 4-0. Francisco would eventually score on an error by Baruch's third baseman to make it 5-0 in favor of the Lightning.
Lehman went on to win the first game, 8-5.
In Game Two, the Lightning (10-12, 4-4 CUNYAC) trailed 9-0 after three and a half innings of play. In the bottom of the fourth, senior first baseman
Carlos Alcantara (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) belted a solo home run to center field to put Lehman on the board. In the home half of the fifth, senior shortstop
Jhon Comas (Yonkers, N.Y./Gregorio Luperon) produced a three-run homer, with one out, to pull the home team to within six runs, at 10-4.
Lehman's power surge would continue in the home half of the sixth, when Smith led off the inning with a solo home run to shrink Baruch's (12-19, 5-3 CUNYAC) lead to 11-5. Later in the inning, with one out and runners on first and second, senior outfielder
Danny Rodriguez (New York, N.Y./Pennsbury) singled to drive in sophomore second baseman
Jason Laguna (Thiells, N.Y./North Rockland) to make it 11-6. Two batters later, freshman third baseman
Christopher Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman H.S.) cashed in with the bases loaded, by hitting a grand slam over the fence in center, to pull Lehman to within one run, at 11-10.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Bearcats scored two runs to put Lehman in a 13-10 hole.
In the bottom frame, with runners on first and second, nobody out, sophomore catcher
Matthew Prevosti (Staten Island, N.Y./CSI H.S.) singled to score Smith, to pull Lehman within two. After Baruch retired the next two Lehman batters,
Danny Rodriguez stepped up to the plate and drilled a double to center, scoring Francisco and Prevosti, to tie the game at 13, forcing the game to extra innings.
The Bearcats were able to score a run in the top of the eight, while holding Lehman scoreless in the bottom frame, to salvage the split.
Comas took the loss in relief, going three innings, giving up one earned run on three hits, and striking out four batters.
The Lightning will host Yeshiva for Senior Day, on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
