Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team defeated the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 12-3, in non-conference action on the South Field on Thursday evening.
The Lightning (12-12) scored six runs in the fourth inning to take control of the game. Trailing 2-0, with runners on second and third, nobody out, Lehman got on the board thanks to a two-run double off the bat of freshman outfielder
Carlo Francisco (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) to tie the game. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded and one out, senior outfielder
Danny Rodriguez (New York, N.Y./Pennsbury) drove in two runs on a ground-rule double to help Lehman jump out to a 4-2 lead. The Lightning scored the last pair of runs in the frame on an error at third base.
With Lehman up 12-3 in the top of the ninth, senior pitcher
Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) came in relief and struck out all three batters he faced to clinch the victory for the Lightning. His third strikeout of the game was the 100
th in his career.
Sophomore pitcher
Francisco Pena (New York, N.Y./Landmark) started and earned his second victory of the season, going seven innings, giving up two earned runs while scattering six hits, and striking out six batters. Senior
Jhon Comas (Yonkers, N.Y./Gregorio Luperon) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and fanned a pair of batters.
At the plate, sophomore outfielder
Socrates Arevalo (Bronx, N.Y./South Bronx) produced a pair of singles and scored a run. Senior
Warren Veras (Bronx, N.Y./Jonathan Levin) drove in two runs on two hits, scored a run, and drew a walk. Smith had two hits, including a double, scored two runs and drove in one. Comas hit a single and scored a run.
Danny Rodriguez now has a .416 batting average, while Smith is hitting .408. Senior first baseman
Carlos Alcantara (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) has a batting average of .403.
Lehman will be back in action on Saturday, for a doubleheader with New York University, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
