Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team suffered a non-conference loss to the College of Staten Island, 11-8, on the South Field, on Monday afternoon.
Sophomore pitcher Francisco Pena (New York, N.Y./Landmark) took the loss in relief, giving up three earned runs and striking out four hitters, in three innings pitched.
The Lightning (2-9) got off to a strong start, as freshman third baseman Christopher Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman H.S.) launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, to put Lehman up 2-0.
CSI (10-7) scored three runs in the top of the third, to take the lead. In the bottom frame, the Lightning tallied four runs to jump back out in front, 6-3. In that inning, senior first baseman Carlos Alcantara (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) and classmate Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) produced an RBI single each, while sophomore outfielder Socrates Arevalo (Bronx, N.Y./South Bronx) connected for a two-run single.
From that point on, CSI took over by scoring eight unanswered runs over the next four innings to take an 11-6 advantage.
Alcantara produced another RBI single, his third run driven in for the afternoon, in the home half of the seventh to cut the Dolphins' lead to 11-8. However, it was not enough as CSI was able to hang on and win by that score.
For the game, Lopez scored three runs, hit two doubles, and produced a two-run homer. Senior infielder Jhon Comas (Yonkers, N.Y./Gregorio Luperon) scored two runs on two hits, and drew a walk.
On the mounds, junior pitcher Ja'von Collins (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlon) started and went 3.1 innings, giving up six earned runs. Smith came in relief, pitching 2.2 shutout innings, while fanning five batters.
The Lightning will travel to Purchase College, to battle the Panthers, on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
