Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team dropped a 22-9 non-conference decision in a cold, misty rain on Wednesday afternoon, to host Purchase College.
Lehman (2-10) got off to a rocky start, yielding three runs in each of the first two innings. However, the Lightning rallied to tie the score at 7-7 after four innings. Lehman would go on to score single runs in the sixth and eighth innings. Purchase (7-7) scored in six different innings to earn the victory.
In the top of the second inning, three consecutive hits by senior first baseman Carlos Alcantara (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders), freshman centerfielder Carlo Francisco (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers), and senior second baseman Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) led to the first three runs for the Lightning. In the fourth, back-to-back hits by senior short stop Jhon Comas (Yonkers, N.Y./Gregorio Luperon) and freshman third baseman Christopher Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman HS) brought home three more runs.
In the top of the sixth inning, an Alcantara sacrifice fly plated Comas, who had singled, then stole second and third. In the eighth, Alcantara knocked his second hit of the day, once again bringing Comas around to score.
Four different pitchers took the hill during the game for Lehman, as junior reliever Matthew Brown (Astoria, N.Y./Holy Cross) took the loss.
On the day, Comas led the offense with three base hits, including a double, with three stolen bases, and four runs scored. Alcantara added three RBI.
Lehman takes a few days break before facing John Jay in a three-game series this weekend. The Lightning will host the Bloodhounds on Saturday for a doubleheader, beginning at noon, with the rubber match set for Sunday at John Jay.
