Box Score 2 BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team earned two come-from-behind wins over New York University in a non-conference doubleheader, on the South Field, on Saturday afternoon. In Game One, the Lightning overcame a 4-2 deficit by scoring three runs in the top of the seventh, to win 5-4. In the second game, Lehman came back from three runs down, to win 10-5. New York University was the home team for the two contests.
In the opening game, the Lightning trailed 4-3, and were down to their final out of the game, in the top of the seventh, when senior outfielder Danny Rodriguez (New York, N.Y./Pennsbury) produced a ground-rule double to right-center, scoring sophomore catcher Matthew Prevosti (Staten Island, N.Y./CSI H.S.) from third to tie the game at four. After senior shortstop Jhon Comas (Yonkers, N.Y./Gregorio Luperon) singled to advance Danny Rodriguez to second, freshman third baseman Christopher Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman H.S.) singled through the left side, to score a run and give the Lightning the lead, 5-4.
Freshman outfielder Carlo Francisco (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) led off Lehman's big inning by hitting a ground-rule double to center. After Prevosti reached base, sophomore second baseman Thomas Montilli (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) moved both runners over by executing a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore outfielder Socrates Arevalo (Bronx, N.Y./South Bronx) produced an RBI, by grounding out to short to score Francisco, and pull Lehman to within a run. That would set the stage for Danny Rodriguez and Lopez to provide the game-tying and game-winning hits respectively.
Senior pitcher Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) earned his fifth win of the season by pitching a complete game, giving up four earned runs, while striking out seven batters.
Earlier in the game, Lopez got Lehman on the board with an RBI double in the top of the first. In the third, Danny Rodriguez scored on a throwing error by the catcher to put Lehman up 2-0. The Violets scored four unanswered runs to take a 4-2 lead, but the Lightning scored three in the top of the seventh to take the lead for good.
In Game Two, the Lightning (14-12) trailed 3-0 early in the game. Senior first baseman Carlos Alcantara (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) drilled a two-run homer in the fourth to pull Lehman to within a run. The Violets (21-23) were able to extend their advantage to 4-2 in the bottom frame, but in the fifth, the Lightning exploded for four runs. Comas produced an RBI single to pull Lehman to within a run, at 4-3. The next batter was Lopez, who tripled to left-center to score two runs, to give Lehman a 5-4 lead.
The Lightning scored three more runs in the seventh and went on to win the game, 10-5.
On the mound, Comas picked up his first win of the season, giving up three earned runs and striking out six batters, in four innings pitched. Prevosti earned the save, giving up just one hit in two scoreless innings. Sophomore Joel Duran (Harlem, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) pitched one inning in relief, giving up an earned run while striking out a batter.
The Lightning have earned the #3 seed in the upcoming CUNY Athletic Conference Championships, and will battle #2 Baruch in the opening game at Westchester Community College, on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
