Baseball Heads into CUNYAC Championships as #3 Seed

BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team earned the #3 seed in the upcoming CUNY Athletic Conference/MCU Championships. The Lightning will take on #2 Baruch in the opening game of the double-elimination tournament, on Thursday at 4:00 p.m., at Westchester Community College. Also that day, #1 the College of Staten Island will host #4 City College, on the campus of CSI at 4:00 p.m.

Here is the full bracket for the tournament:

Day 1 – May 7, 2015 @ Higher Seeds

Game 1     4:00 p.m.        #1 CSI vs. #4 CCNY

Game 2    4:00 p.m.        #2 Baruch vs. #3 Lehman

Day 2 – May 8, 2015 @ MCU Park, Coney Island

Game 3    1 p.m.    Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2

Game 4    4 p.m.    Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 2

Game 5    7 p.m.    Winner Game 3 vs. Loser Game 4

Day 3 – May 9, 2015 @ MCU Park, Coney Island

Game 6    4 p.m.    Winner Game 4 vs. Winner Game 5 (If winner of game 4 wins

then they are the champions – otherwise move to …)

Game 7    7 p.m.        Same as Game 6 (If necessary)

 

Lehman (14-12, 4-4 CUNYAC) and Baruch (12-21, 5-3 CUNYAC) split both ends of the head-to-head CUNYAC doubleheader during the regular season. The Lightning won the first game, 8-5, but the Bearcats won the second, 14-13, in extra innings.

The Lightning are led by CUNYAC Player of the Year Stephen Smith (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders). At the plate this season, he hit .398 with four home runs and 23 RBI. On the mound, he went 5-2, and struck out 67 batters in 48 innings pitched.

Freshman third baseman Christopher Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman H.S.) compiled a .413 batting average with seven home runs and 31 RBI. Senior shortstop Jhon Comas (Yonkers, N.Y./Gregorio Luperon) also had a productive year at the plate, hitting .374, drilling five home runs , and drove in 29 runs.  

Senior outfielder Danny Rodriguez (New York, N.Y./Pennsbury) produced a team-high batting average of .417, while classmate Carlos Alcantara (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) belted six home runs, 32 RBI, and produced a batting average of .392.
