Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's soccer team earned a non-conference victory over St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn, 3-1, at Aviator Field on Saturday afternoon. The Lightning are now 3-1.
Sophomore
Brandon Melendez Ruiz (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick to help propel Lehman to a road victory.
The Lightning were able to get on the board in the seventh minute, thanks to an own goal committed by the Bears defense. After St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn evened the match at one, Ruiz was awarded a penalty kick thanks to a foul committed by the Bears in the 34
th minute. He took advantage of the opportunity by drilling the ball past the goalkeeper, to give the Lightning a 2-1 lead.
Lehman's defense was able to shut down St. Joseph's in the second half, as the Bears had limited scoring opportunities.
With less than two minutes to play in regulation, freshman forward
Bijean Johnson (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) gave the Lightning insurance by dribbling the ball through the Bears' defense and sliding the shot low, past the goalie, extending Lehman's lead to 3-1.
The Lightning doubled the Bears in shots on goal, 6-3, while each team produced three corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper
Irvin Barreto (Brooklyn, N.Y./Martin Luther King, Jr.) recorded two saves to earn the victory.
The Lightning will travel to Maritime on Tuesday, to battle the Privateers, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
