Douglas Venancio Dos Santos scored a pair of goals in the second half, including the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining , to help Lehman defeat the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 2-1, in the season opener, on Tuesday afternoon on the South Field. Lehman starts the year off 1-0.
In the closing minutes of regulation, Dos Santos (New Rochelle, N.Y.) sprinted to the front of the net, took a feed from freshman midfielder
Daniel Goes (New Rochelle, N.Y./SEBCOC), and buried the ball into the back of the net to give Lehman the lead for good, 2-1, with 1:38 remaining.
Earlier in the match, the Dolphins (0-1) struck first with a goal off a penalty kick from Jair Magallan to give the visitors a 1-0 lead, with just 12 seconds remaining in the opening half. In the second stanza, Dos Santos scored his first goal of the contest thanks to an assist from
Ramone Rowe on the throw-in. Dos Santos deflected the ball into the cage to tie the match at one, with 17:12 left to play. This would setup Dos Santos' heroics, with less than two minutes remaining, that propelled Lehman to a thrilling 2-1 victory.
Junior goalkeeper
Irvin Barreto (Brooklyn, N.Y./Martin Luther King, Jr.) stopped four out of five shots on goal that he faced. Lehman had eight corner kicks and outshot Mount Saint Vincent 15-8.
The Lightning will be back in action on Saturday, for a road non-conference match against New Paltz. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
