Box Score TEANECK, N.J – The Lehman College men's soccer team earned a thrilling victory, defeating Yeshiva 3-2 in overtime, on Friday afternoon at Votee Park. Sophomore midfielder
Brandon Melendez Ruiz scored two goals, including the game-winner in extra time.
Lehman (4-4) got on the board first, as Ruiz (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton) took a feed from freshman forward
Bijean Johnson (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman), sprinted down the field and shot the ball past the goalkeeper in the 20
th minute, to put the Lightning up 1-0. It was a defensive battle for the remainder of the half, as Lehman kept its one-goal lead at halftime.
In the second half, Lehman created more separation, thanks to a goal by sophomore midfielder
Gentian Muhaxheri (Bronx, N.Y./Bedri Pejani, Kosovo ) to give Lehman a 2-0 lead in the 72
nd minute. Ruiz and freshman midfielder
Caio Zogbi Barbosa Mancanares (New Rochelle, N.Y./Coronel Osorio del Oluera) were credited with the assists.
The Maccabees (3-4-1) would not go down without a fight, as they scored two unanswered goals in a span of 4:45 to tie the match at two. The game-tying goal occurred with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation.
90 minutes was not enough to determine a winner so overtime was needed. Just over seven minutes into the extra session, freshman defender
Sebastian Castano (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) fed the ball to Ruiz who dribbled the ball in front of the net, then buried the game-winner to clinch Lehman's fourth victory of the year.
Each team produced 17 shots during the match. Junior goalkeeper
Jesus Marin (East Harlem, N.Y./Manhattan Village Academy) made eight saves to earn the victory.
The Lightning will travel to Aviator field to battle CUNY Athletic Conference rival, York College, on Wednesday. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
