Lightning Sink Cardinals in the Pool

The Lehman Men's and Women's swimming and diving teams defeated CUNYAC rival York. The Lightning men prevailed 102-72 and the women won 109-77. The women improve to 5-5 on the season. The Lehman women stand at 2-3 in conference meets. The York women fall to 1-8. The Lehman men are now 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The York men are 1-6:0-3. The women won the first event, the 200 medley relay by more than 20 seconds and never let up. The relay team of Melody Ovalles, Jessica Reynoso, Elizabeth Oladele and Gabriela Garcia posted a 2:20.31 to lead the Lightning to victory. A couple events later in the 200 m freestyle the Lightning swept the top three places with Reynoso, Alexis Vasquez and Claudia Rodriguez claiming the top three spots. Ovalles continued her strong season by earning gold in the 50 free in a time of 31.70. Angela Mejia went on to win the 200 IM in 2:51.04. In the 100 fly, Mejia took the top spot while Yaidee Nieves finished in second. In the 100 back, Ovalles and Susana Perez finished 1, 2. Christy Maldonado won the 400 free after posting a 6:10.42.

The Lehman men also swept the 200 m freestyle as Enes Mernica, Siprian Mayol and Dominique Herrera were never seriously challenged. Lehman also swept the 200 IM as Chris Fischer, Herman Rodriguez and Andy Almonte finished 1,2,3 with Fischer posting a 2:41.22. Anthony Preda, Fischer and Pedro Silverio also swept the 100 free with Preda posting a 56.44. In the 100 back, Mayol prevailed in 1:29.50 beating his nearest competitor by more than a minute. Ryan Sanchez earned a gold medal in the 300 free by posting a 5:13.66.

Lehman will step out of CUNYAC competition on Friday night as they host Mt. St. Vincent at 6:00 PM in the APEX Pool. In a pre-meet ceremony the seniors on the squad will be recognized.
