Box Score Bronx, N.Y. – Junior
Abdaulaye Bassirou netted his first goal of the season in the 85th minute as the Lehman College men's soccer team topped CUNYAC foe Baruch College, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at the South Field.
The win helps the Lightning (4-3-3, 2-0-2 CUNYAC) remain unbeaten in conference play. Goalkeeper
Irvin Barreto made four saves as he recorded his second straight shutout (three overall).
King Owusu fired three shots, while Bassirou and
Essosa Aluyi each took two shots in the victory.
The first half saw both teams have good opportunities to score, but both Barreto and Carrillo stopped all the shots they faced. Owusu got two shots on goal in front of the net and
Alfons Bujaj let loose a shot on target, but could not break through as they went to halftime scoreless.
In the second, the Lightning defense had to clamp down as the Bearcats (2-5-1, 1-3-1 CUNYAC) controlled the attack for the majority of the half. Two free kicks at the top of the box were thwarted by Lehman deflections, and would help keep the score even.
Baruch would be down a player the final 15 minutes of the game, as Carrillo received a red card. This helped the Lightning create an attack for a chance to grab the first goal of the game. Bassirou would break the scoreless tie at 84:54, when the ball was deflected past the keeper and he had an open net to grab a 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats had a final chance in the last minute on a corner, but they failed to break through and Lehman grabbed the regulation win.
The Lightning look for their third win in four matches when they host York in CUNYAC play Wednesday night. Start time is set for 5:00 p.m. at the South Field. Live stats and streaming video will be made available at LehmanAthletics.com.
