Essosa Aluyi netted the game-winning in the 62nd minute as the Lehman College men's soccer team hung on and defeated the College of Staten Island, 1-0, in a critical CUNYAC matchup Saturday afternoon at the South Field.
The Lightning (7-3-3, 5-0-2 CUNYAC) extend their conference unbeaten streak to seven games, and now sits in first place as
well as clinches a first-round bye in the conference tournament.
Omar Moro tallied the lone assist on the day, while goalkeeper
Irvin Barreto secured his fourth shutout of the season with four saves.
Staten Island drops to 8-6-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the CUNYAC, currently placing them in fourth.
Both the Dolphins and Lightning played aggressively on the both sides of the field, not allowing a goal in the first half. Lehman failed to register a shot on goal until Aluyi retrieved a Moro blocked pass that pushed past the keeper and netted in the game-winning goal at 61:27.
A few missed opportunities in the box for Lehman kept the game a one-goal advantage. CSI had their chances to even the score with nine shots in the second half, but the defense held them off until the final horn.
