Box Score Old Westbury, N.Y. -- The Lehman College women's volleyball team jumped out to a two-set advantage, then had to hold on to defeat The College of Old Westbury, 3-2 [25-17, 25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 15-11], Monday night in Long Island.
The win helped snap a long losing streak for the Lightning (5-17) that spanned the month of October, and is the first time they have won a five-set match this season. Leading the charge was
Caitlin Vernon, who slammed a game-high 15 kills out of the 48 team kills and five blocks in the win.Â
Lindsay Pantaleon collected 14 kills to go along with a season-high 13 service aces in the match, whileÂ
Salveira Gonzalez totaled 14 kills of her own. Primary setterÂ
Samantha Delgado dished out 39 assists and seven aces in the victory, andÂ
Yaidee Nieves tallied a game-best 20 digs.
Nikia Gardon and Shanayia Lloyd each compiled four kills for the Panthers (2-15). Amanda Neenan added five service aces in the losing effort.
Lehman grabbed control early in the first set with six of the first seven points, but the Panthers would chip away and make it close until nine unanswered points sealed the set for them led by six Pantaleon service aces. They would fall behind in set two, but another run of nine straight points put them up 19-12 and would pull away to a 25-20 win.Â
In sets three and four, the Lightning fell short in both after having the chance to close out the match, as Old Westbury would break ties of 21 and 23 respectively to win both which sent the match to a deciding fifth set. They would jump out to a 7-0 run with three Delgado aces and kills from Pantaleon and Vernon. The Panthers would chip away at the deficit to 12-11, but kills from Delgado and Pantaleon and an error helped seal the win.
