Bronx, NY – The Lehman College men's soccer team earned the CUNYAC automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament by defeating Hunter in the CUNYAC Championship game 2-1 this past Saturday at Brooklyn College. On Monday, the Lighting found out that they will travel to Glassboro, NJ to face Rowan University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Kick-off is slated for 5:00 PM on Saturday with the winner moving onto the second round Sunday at 5:00 PM against the winner of the Tufts-Springfield game.
Lehman (10-3-3) is making only their second appearance in school history in the NCAA Tournament. Their previous appearance was in 2011 when they were defeated by Stevens.
Essosa Aluyi will lead the Lightning attack. The junior has nine goals in 13 games this season including four game winners. Senior goalkeeper
Irvin Barreto, the CUNYAC Tournament MVP, will be called upon to stop the Profs high powered offense. Barreto has surrendered nine goals in 13 games while recording six shut-outs.
The Profs won the NJAC (New Jersey Athletic Conference) regular season title but fell in the NJAC Tournament final. It is the second straight appearance for the south Jersey school in the NCAA Tournament. Rowan has a rich history in the NCAA Championships. The Profs were crowned National Champions in 1981 and then again in 1990. They also finished second twice and third three times. This will mark Rowan's 26
th appearance in the NCAA play-offs.
Rowan brings a 16-2-1 mark into the tournament and rank as one of the top scoring team in Division III. Shane Doherty and Travis Ward lead the Profs attack with 13 and 10 goals respectively.
