Miguel Melendez’s Hot Bat is not Enough to Take Down the Bears

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bronx, NY –  Lehman (2-9) dropped both ends of a double header against St. Joseph's (BKLYN) 21-6 and 13-10 in a pair of seven-inning non-conference games.

Miguel Melendez led Lehman with five hits on eight at bats with a pair of RBIs.

In game one the Lightning gave up three runs in the top of the first but rallied with five in the bottom of the second to take a lead.  Juan Arias double to lead off the bottom of the frame and Melendez stroke a double to right center to plate Arias.  After Melendez advanced to third on a ground out, Joshua Pacheco also doubled for the Lightning.  Pacheco than advanced to third on another ground out and scored on a balk.  Steve Cuello kept the inning alive with a single to right and then Carlo Francisco homered to center field to give the Lightning a 5-3 lead.  Things unraveled for Lehman in the top of the third as the Bears set a school record by scoring 16 runs on 12 hits.  The Lightning added a run in the bottom half on the third on a lead-off home run by Chris Lopez to round out their scoring in the first game.

In the nightcap, Juan Arias went three for four with three runs scored.

The Lightning once again fell behind early as they gave up two runs in the top of the first.  Lehman was able to cut the deficit in half in the third.  Arias knocked a lead-off double to left field and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Catcher Matt Prevosti stroked a single to center field to plate Arias.  The Bears added one in the fourth and two more in the fifth before the Lightning answered in the home half of the fifth with two runs of their own.  Francisco and Natanael Toribio lead off the innings with back to back singles but the Lightning then hit into a double play.  With two outs Arias crushed a ball over the right center field fence plating two runs and cutting the lead to 5-3.  The Bears would answer right back in the sixth and seventh innings by scoring three and five runs respectively.  Lehman would not go away quietly in their final at bat.  Lopez led off with a double to left and Arias moved him to third with a single through the left side.  Melendez then proceeded to double down the left field line scoring Lopez and moving Arias to third.  An Eduardo Hodgson single up the middle plated Arias and send Melendez to third.  After a foul out, pinch hitter Jim Kennedy singled through the right side to score G. Rodriguez who came into pinch run.  Cuello then walked to load the bases.  After a fly out, Toribio reached on a error that also scored two runs.  A Lopez single plated scored two more runs and after a walk to Arias the Lightning has the tying run at the plate with two outs but were unable to eek-out another run and fell by the score of 13-10.

The Lightning will continue their home stand on Tuesday and Wednesday, hosting St. Joseph (LI) and Purchase.  The first pitch for both games will be at 4:00 PM.
