Bearcats edge Baseball in extra innings

Matthew Prevosti
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BROOKLYN, NY --- The Lehman College baseball team lost both games of their Saturday double-header at Baruch College, 7-4 and 4-3, respectively, played at MCU Park at Coney Island in Brooklyn.

In the opener, the Lightning found themselves down 3-0 after the first inning, but they would soon answer. In the top of the second, junior first baseman James Kennedy crushed an RBI double to center field, driving in junior catcher Matthew Prevosti and putting Lehman on the board. Then in the third, junior third baseman Juan Arias singled to bring home sophomore shortstop Natanael Toribio. The very next at bat, Arias scored from second on an error and the game was tied at three runs apiece. Down 5-3 in the top of the fourth, junior second baseman Steve Cuello hit an RBI single to center and junior right fielder Miguel Melendez crossed home plate. But that would be as close as the Lightning would come, however, as the Bearcats scored runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth.

Junior pitcher Francisco Pena entered the game in relief for Lehman, allowing no earned runs in two innings.

In the nightcap, Lehman got on the board first when Prevosti hit a two-run home run in the top of the second. It was his first shot of the season and the second of his career. In the top of the sixth, the Lightning went up 3-1 when sophomore center fielder Carlo Francisco drew a bases loaded walk, and Kennedy advanced home from third. Once again, however, the Bearcats rallied. With Lehman two outs away from a win, Baruch sophomore outfielder Edwin Saint-Hilaire hit an RBI triple to pull his team to within one. The very next at-bat, Saint-Hilaire tied it when he reached home on a wild pitch, tying the game at 3-3 and ultimately sending it into extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Lightning retired the first two Bearcats, only to watch Baruch load the bases on three walks. Saint-Hilaire then came to the plate, drawing the walk-off walk and giving his team the victory.

The Lightning of Lehman (8-22 / 2-6 CUNYAC) have concluded their conference schedule, and now await word on their position in the upcoming CUNYAC Championship Tournament. The Bearcats of Baruch (11-15 / 5-1 CUNYAC) clinch no worse than second place in the league standings with two conference games left.

Up next for Lehman, the team travels to Kings Point, New York on Tuesday where they will play the United States Merchant Marine Academy in a 4:15. p.m. contest.
