Bronx, NY – The Lightning let one slip away this afternoon as they fell to the Valiants of Manhattanville (23-11) 8-6 in 10 innings. Lehman falls to 8-23.
The Lightning got on the board during their first at best as the first three batters reached base. Singles by
Steve Cuello, Carlo Fransisco and
Natanael Toribio plated the Lightning's first run of the contest. Lehman tacked on two more in the third as Fransisco and Toribio led off the frame with back to back home runs to left field. It was the first time this season that the Lightning delivered back to back homers. Later in the inning the Lightning manufactured another run as
Juan Arias singled, stole second and later advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Blake DeRenzis drove him home with a single to right to give the Lightning a 4-0 advantage. Manhattanville's John Delahanty put the Valiants on the board in the top of the fourth with a lead-off home run to left center. The Valiants tied the game in the fifth with three runs on five hits. Lehman answered right back in the bottom of the fifth. Toribio reached on an infield single and moved to second on a wild pick-off attempt. He advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on Arias's ground out. The Valiants were able to battle back in the top of the seventh when they plated two runs aided by two Lehman miscues. The Lightning tied the game in the bottom of the eighth. Arias and
James Kennedy hit back to back singles with one out to set the table. A wild pitch moved Arias to third and he later scored on a ground rule double by Matt Prevosti. The Valiants almost produced the go ahead run in the ninth but a strong defensive stand by Lehman prevented the go ahead run. Manhattanville led off the inning with a double and was able to move the runner to third with one out. Lightning pitcher
Harrison Paulino induced a sharp ground ball to Cuello at second who was able to gun down the Valiant runner at the plate to eliminate the threat. In the bottom of the ninth the Lightning threatened. Lehman had runners on the corners with two outs but could not deliver. In the tenth a lead-off home run by Chris Conklin put the Valiants ahead. They were able to tack another on for the final margin of victory.
Toribio was 4-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Cuello, Fransisco and Arias had two hits apiece.
Jordanis Nunez was credited with two RBI to go along with three hits in six at bats for Manhattanvillle.
The Lightning are back in action tomorrow at 5:00 PM on the South Field against Western Connecticut.
