Essosa Aluyi broke a scoreless tie with a golden goal in the 93rd minute as the Lehman College men's soccer team prevailed against CUNYAC foe Hunter, 1-0, in overtime Saturday afternoon at the South Field.
Aluyi notched his team-leading fourth goal as the Lightning (3-2-3, 1-0-2 CUNYAC) remain unbeaten in the conference. The goal was the first allowed by Hunter in four games [362 total minutes]. Goalkeeper
Irvin Barreto made three saves to record his second shutout of the season, while
King Owusu and
Abdaulaye Bassirou each recorded a shot on goal.
The Hawks (4-4-1, 2-1 CUNYAC) got three saves from goalkeeper Paul Alain Yovoh Tenfoung. Daniel Kisel fired two shots on goal, while Mostafa Mosaab put a header on goal in a losing effort.
Hunter looked to score early in the first half, getting three headers in front of net off corner kicks but could not convert. A strong defensive performance sent the two teams into halftime scoreless. Lehman had a few chances to earn a regulation win, but two shots in the last minute were saved near the net as the game went to overtime.
Two minutes into the first overtime period, Aluyi recovered a shot off the Owusu attempt ricocheted off the crossbar then regained the ball after an initial shot to secure the win in overtime.
The Lightning will return to action Wednesday night, when they travel to Purchase and take on Manhattanville College. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
