Box Score Madison, N.J. -- In their 2017 season opener, the Lehman College baseball team grabbed an early lead, but too many mishaps later in the game led to them falling to Drew University, 6-1, Thursday afternoon at Doc Young Field.
Natanael Toribio drove in the Lightning's (0-1) lone run with a fielder's choice in the fourth inning that gave them an early advantage.
Emmanuel Velasquez allowed one earned run through six innings, but was the pitcher on record for the loss.
Steve Cuello came in to score on the Toribio fielder's choice as and collected two hits.
Drew (2-0) was led on the mound by starter Pete Violante, who tossed 6 2/3 strong innings and struck out five to earn the victory. Both Tommy Broyles and Mike Miraglia had a run batted in each.
After three scoreless innings, Lehman struck first in the top of the fourth after a Cuello double and a
Carlo Francisco single which led to Toribio grounding into a fielder's choice to second. However, they could not convert on more runs in the frame.
In the bottom of the fifth, Drew took advantage of a fielding error (first of six errors) after two base hits. Broyles would then drive in a run on a sacrifice fly, then Miraglia roped an RBI single to give them a 2-1 edge. The sixth saw them allow two runs with two outs, both on wild pitches from Velasquez. They added two more in the seventh due to two errors made that extended the lead which sealed the win.
The team will return to action March 3rd as they travel down to Myrtle Beach as part of the Ripken Experience for a week. They will take on York (Pa.) at 3:30 p.m. in South Carolina.
