Lightning's Rally Falls Short in Loss to John Jay, 13-10

Box Score Bronx, N.Y. -- After falling behind early in the game, the Lehman College baseball team made a valiant effort in the latter portion of the game but could not complete the comeback as they lost to CUNYAC foe John Jay, 13-10, Saturday afternoon on the campus of Fordham University.

The Lightning now drop to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in the CUNYAC, while John Jay earns their first conference win of the season and improve to 2-9.

Carlo Francisco went four-for-five on the day, scoring a run and driving in three runs in the loss. Jeffrey Ledesma belted a home run and rove in two runs while while Steve Cuello added two RBI of his own. Jose Albrincole was the pitcher of record for Lehman, allowing five earned through three innings pitched.

The Bloodhounds got two RBI apiece from Zach Hyde, Dylan Laudano, and Charlee Rodriguez in the victory. Joe Gregory struck out five batters over 6 1/3 to earn his first win of the season.

The first inning saw the Bloodhounds jump out in front with four runs in the frame. They then added a run each in both the second and third to push their lead to 6-0. Natanael Toribio got the Lightning on the board in the fourth with an RBI double, then Francisco followed with a run-scoring single to cut the deficit to 6-2.

John Jay scored two more in the fourth then followed with three more in the fifth thanks to a wild pitch, RBI groundout and an RBI single. Ledesma roped a solo shot down the left in left, then Francisco drove in Toribio in the sixth to chip away again to 11-4.

After the Bloodhounds pushed their lead to 13-4 in the sixth, Lehman finally built some momentum in the seventh. Cuello's RBI double, a Toribio bases-loaded walk, a Juan Arias RBI single and Toribio scoring on an error as they compiled four runs in the seventh.

In the ninth, Lehman loaded the bases with nobody out and both Cuello and Ledesma drew bases-loaded walks to chip it down to 13-10. However a strikeout with the winning run at bat ended the comeback attempt.

The Lightning return to action Tuesday afternoon on the road, when they take on The College of Old Westbury. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
