Box Score Brooklyn, N.Y. -- The Lehman College baseball erupted out to a sizable lead early in the game, but failed to hold onto it in the later innings as they lost to St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) in an 18-15 defeat Friday afternoon at the American Legion Field.
The Lightning now fall to 8-23 overall on the season, while the Bears improve to 13-17.
Jeffrey Ledesma went four-for-six on the day with three runs scored and three runs batted in, including a home run, in a losing effort. They also got two RBI each from
Steve Cuello,
Carlo Francisco,
Christopher Lopez, and
Jaime Maldonado.
Natanael Toribio ripped four hits as well and scored three runs, while
Matthew Prevosti and
Juan Arias each recorded an RBI.
Lehman got the scoring started right away in the first inning, tallying five in the frame. Ledesma belted a two-run homer, then Prevosti along with Arias and Maldonado each followed with RBI singles. They then scored four more in the second inning. Ledesma again got it going with a run-scoring single, then Francisco roped a double and Lopez lifted a sac fly to right. Maldonado's RBI single capped off the inning for the Lightning.
Up 10-1 in the fourth, St. Joseph's battled back in the game with six in the fourth and four in the fifth to capture the lead at 11-10. Ledesma would tie the game in the seventh with his fourth RBI of the game, but the Bears would respond with a run-scoring grounder in the bottom half of the frame.
The eighth inning saw Lehman regain the lead as a wild pitch scored Prevosti, then Cuello plated two on a single to left-center as they moved ahead 14-12. However, the bottom of the eight saw the Bears totaling six runs for an 18-14 advantage. Lopez would drive in a run in the ninth, but their rally would fall short to close out the game.
The Lightning return to action tomorrow afternoon on the road, capping off an extended road stand. They face off with the College of Staten Island as part of a doubleheader.
