Lightning Split Road Doubleheader with Staten Island

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Staten Island, N.Y. -- The Lehman College baseball team could not hold onto the lead in game one of a CUNYAC doubleheader, 9-4, but would score two late runs in the second game to salvage a split against Staten Island, 4-3, Sunday afternoon.

In game one, the Lightning (9-23) got a run batted in from both Jeffrey Ledesma and Christopher Lopez (home run). Steve Cuello scored two runs, while Natanael Toribio earned a stolen base.

Lehman jumped out to a lead in the early goings of game one, with Ledesma plating Cuello on a ground out in the first. Lopez then followed with a home run to extend the lead to 2-0.

After a Dolphins (23-9-1) homer in the third, the Lightning would respond with two runs in the fifth. Juan Arias would score on a throwing error, then Cuello crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the sixth, Staten Island would rally with a seven-run inning on bases-loaded walks and errors in the frame. They would shut down Lehman in the seventh to close out the victory.

Game two saw the Lightning again get off to an early advantage, scoring two runs in the first on a Ledesma RBI single and Toribio coming home on a passed ball. A Lehman error allowed a Staten Island run to score in the third, then would score two runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Brandon Castillo led off with a base hit to left. Carlo Francisco would follow with a a single of his own, and both would advance bases on a wild pitch.

Matt Prevosti then ripped a single to right-center to tie the game at 3. With two outs in the inning, Jaime Maldonado would deliver the go-ahead hit with a single through the right side to put Lehman ahead.

Starting pitcher Harrison Paulino secured his first win of the 2017 season, tossing seven strong innings and allowing just two earned runs. He would close out with one-two-three innings in the sixth and seventh to seal the win.

The Lightning return home following a long road trip tomorrow, when they again take on the same Staten Island team at the South Field. First pitch for the single game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Live stats and streaming video will be made available at LehmanAthletics.com.
