Box Score Bueno talks after the game on Senior Day
Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team wrapped up their 2017 regular season Tuesday, and went out on a winning streak as they defeated New Paltz, 15-9, in a nonconference matchup at the South Field.
The Lightning (11-24) now have won three straight games to close out the postseason, and will look to continue their momentum for the CUNYAC postseason.
Prior to the game, a total of nine seniors were recognized for their achievements on Senior Day. Lehman president Jose Luis Cruz along with athletic director
Dr. Martin L. Zwiren were on hand to salute seniors
Steve Cuello,
Juan Arias,
Jaime Maldonado,
Harrison Paulino,
Martin Bueno,
Jason Laguna,
Matthew Prevosti,
Jeffrey Ledesma, and
Christopher Lopez.
Lopez belted two home runs and drove in three runs, while Cuello (homer) and Toribio also plated three runs apiece. Bueno went going three-for-three (single, double, triple) with three runs scored and two RBI. Maldonado drove in two, while Arias and Ledesma recorded a run batted in each.
Laguna secured his first win of the season after allowing three hits and striking out three through the first three innings. Chris Encarnacion came in later for three scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts to notch the save. Chris Rodriguez struck out five batters also in relief.
Lehman scored seven runs in the first inning as Toribio, Ledesma and Maldonado each ripped RBI singles. Arias and Cuello doubled home runs to extend the advantage. Lopez belted a solo homer in the second to put the team up 8-0.
However, New Paltz would take advantage of mishaps and walks to score five in the third, including a grand slam by Danny Campbell. Now up 8-5, Cuello would lift a sacrifice fly in the third and then Bueno followed in the fifth with a two-run double to the gap as the Lightning moved ahead, 11-5.
The sixth saw the Hawks (17-17) climb back into the game with four runs, slicing the deficit to 11-9 but Encarnacion would come in and hold the lead. Lehman would tack on some insurance runs in the eighth inning, as Toribio and Lopez each launched two-run homers to add to the lead.
Encarnacion would escape trouble in the ninth inning to seal the win for the Lightning.
Lehman will seek to take down John Jay in the first round of the CUNYAC playoffs Thursday. First pitch is set for 12 noon on the campus of Staten Island. Live stats and streaming video will be available through CSI's website.
