Staten Island, NY - The fifth seed Lightning fell 4-1 to the fourth seed Bloodhounds of John Jay in the opening round of the CUNYAC Baseball Championships. The loss snapped a three game winning streak, Lehman's longest of the season.
Lightning starting pitcher Manny Velasquez got in trouble in the second as he walked two and hit a third batter to load the bases. A subsequent single by Jason Gonzalez through the left side to plate two runs. The Lightning cut the deficit in half in the top of the third.
Steve Cuello led off the inning getting hit by pitch and quickly stole second and third base. Jeff Ledesma delivered a single up the middle to to notch his 40th rbi of the season. John Jay added two more runs in the fifth thanks in part to a pair of Lightning miscues as well as a wild pitch.
The Lightning threatened in the ninth but could not score.
Velasquez took the hard loss throwing a complete game having only surrendered one earned run and four hits. John Jay's Christian Rodriguez also pitched a complete game and was credited with the victory. He struck out eight and gave up five hits. The Bloodhounds move on to play the top seed Dolphins of the College of Staten Island later this afternoon.
Lehman finishes the season with a record of 11-24. John Jay improves to 12-23.
