Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Lehman College baseball team evened its record at 1-1 with a 23-10 victory over Manchester in a game played at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach on Friday. Mark Vargas went 5-5 in the game.
The Lightning jumped out to a 6-0 lead with six runs in the first. After a leadoff walk, Michael Zerbo laced a one-out single to put runners on first and second. Carlo Francisco reached on a fielder's choice and Zerbo got to second. An RBI single by Vargas plated Zerbo with the first run. Two batters later, Namir Garcia drove in the second run. From there, Julius Puryear connected on an RBI single to make the score, 3-0. An unearned run made it 4-0. Finally, David Rodriguez drove in a pair with a double.
Lehman added another run an inning later on a double from Vargas and another from Garcia to give the Lightning seven runs. Four more runs came across in the third. Sal Ventola reached on a single. Rodriguez followed with a double and runners were on second and third. Francisco cleared the bases with a homer and the score was 10 for Lehman. Vargas got his third hit of the game with a double. Brandon Castillo plated him with a base hit and Lehman had 11 runs.
Six runs for Lehman in the fourth put the game out of reach. They added two more each in the fifth, sixth and seventh and won 23-10. Emmanuel Velasquez started and earned the win in six innings of work. Chris Delgado and Rich Frommelt combined to throw a scoreless seventh. The Lightning slugged 23 hits including a pair of homers from Francisco and another from Vargas.
The Lehman College baseball team returns to action on Saturday, March 3, when they face Johnson & Wales at 11:30 AM.
