Flemington, NJ: The Lehman College baseball season started in earnest today as the Lightning traveled to Flemington, NJ to face Centenary University in a season opening doubleheader for both teams. Lehman dropped the first game 1-0 but prevailed in game two 10-0. Both games were played at Diamond Nation.
In the opener Lehman hurler
Rich Frommelt took the hard luck loss as he pitched a complete game scattering five hits and striking out two.
The Cycylones got on the board in the sixth inning after lead-off hitter Chase Koffel singled to right center. With one out Cole Fratesi tripled to left center driving in the only run of the contest. It was only one of two extra base hits on the day. The other was the by Lehman's
Geraldo Rodriguez whose led off the second with a double but was stranded. Lehman's best chance in game one came in the opening inning as the Lightning had runners on the corners with two outs but could not push a run across the plate. The Lightning stranded six runners over the seven innings.
In game two, the Lightning struck first as they posted a pair of runs on three hits with
Emmanuel Frias delivering an rbi single through the left side aided by a Centenary error. Lehman broke the game open in the third as they batted around platting five runs on five hits. The big blow was a lead-off home run by
Mark Vargas.
Anthony Riley doubled with the bases loaded to plate two while Mike Zerbo and Rodriguez were each credited with an rbi. The Lightning added three insurance runs in the seventh without recording a hit.
Jarret Oehler went the distance for the Lightning striking out six and scattering three hits.
The Lightning return to action on Wednesday, February 27th. Lehman will travel to New Jersey to face Montclair State. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM
