Lightning Open the Season at Centenary

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Hackettstown, NJ - The Lehman College baseball team opened the season at Centenary University, christening the new turf field on the New Jersey campus falling 11-7 in game one and 9-6 in the nightcap.
 
The Lightning scored four runs on three hits to take a commanding 4-0 in the first.  Fernando Polanco was hit by pitch to start the game and advanced to third on a Jeremmy Santos double to center field.  After a Justin Nunez walk, Anthony Riley recorded an rbi on a ground out to short stop.  Rob Kiernan proceeded to double down the left field line to score Santos and Nunez.  After a Mike Zerbo walk, Sal Ventola singled to right to plate Kiernan for the final run of the frame.  Lehman added another run in the second when Santos reached base on a one out double to right, his second two bagger in as many at bats, and scored when newcomer Justin Nunez singled through the right side. The Lightning threatened in the third with Zerbo and Ventola on second and third with no outs but could not find a way to extend their lead. In the fourth the Lightning tacked on two more runs with the big blow coming off the bat of Rob Kiernan as he tripled to right field to take a 7-0 lead after four innings
 
The Cyclones got on the scoreboard in the fifth with four unearned runs aided by four Lightning errors.  Centenary added seven more in the sixth for the victory. 
 
Lehman starting pitcher Jarret Oehler took a hard luck no decision pitching five innings surrendering only one earned run while striking out six.  Santos went 3-4 with two runs scored including a pair of doubles.  Kiernan recorded two extra-base hits, two runs scored and three rbi. 

In game two the Lightning fell behind 6-0 in the first inning, however Lehman battled back scoring three in fifth and three more in the sixth to tie the score.  However, the Cyclones plated three in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory.
 
Zerbo led off the top of the fifth with a walk and advanced to second on a singles by Kyle James.  Ventola proceeded to single up the middle to put the Lightning on the board.  After Polanco singled to short, a walk by Santos and a sacrifice fly by Nunez cut the deficit in half.  In the sixth, Riley led off the sixth with a double to left and moved to third on a Zerbo single.  Tran Hennessy then singled to score Riley.  James reached on a hit by pitch and Polanco walked to load the based with two outs.  Santos then doubled down the left field line to tie the game at 6.  The Cyclones took the lead in the bottom half of the frame scoring three times on four hits. 
 
Lehman will take two weeks off to regroup before heading to South Carolina where they will play seven games in five days.
