The Lehman College women's tennis team (5-8 Overall, 4-2 CUNYAC) won for the fourth time in their last six tries, defeating the Medgar Evers Cougars (3-3 Overall, 2-3 CUNYAC) by a score of 6-3 Thursday afternoon at the APEX Tennis Courts in the Bronx.
The Lightning got off to a good start in the all-important conference match. At No. 1 doubles, Lehman's team of Evauna Neville and Gabriella Harewood defeated Medgar Evers' pairing of Mauresia Grant and Sherine Crawford by a score of 8-1. The Cougars would take the No. 2 doubles set, as Marcyenda Cupid and Natisha Davis defeated Natalee Smith and Juyoung Kwon by a score of 8-0. Lehman won the third set by default to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles competition.
When play switched over to singles, the Lightning captured four out of the six singles sets to account for the 6-3 win. At No. 1 singles, Neville set the tone as she downed Crawford 6-2, 6-3. Smith got past Cupid, 6-2, 6-4, and Rodriguez and Kwon nailed down victories at No.'s five and six set singles, respectively. Following the victory, Head Coach Zack Davis was very impressed with his team's win.
“We got off to a rough start this season, but the girls have really come together and they are gaining more and more confidence each time they take the court,” Davis said. “We have two more matches and hopefully we'll bring the same attitude into those two matches that we have towards the matches in the last three weeks.”
Lehman returns to action Friday afternoon as the Lightning travel to Brooklyn to battle the Bridges, with match time scheduled for 3:30pm.
