The Lehman College women's tennis team (5-9 Overall, 4-3 CUNYAC) had their two-match winning streak snapped as the Lightning fell to the Brooklyn College Bridges (7-3 Overall, 5-1 CUNYAC) by a score of 7-2 on Friday afternoon in Brooklyn, NY.
Brooklyn began the match by taking two of three in doubles play, as they were victorious in the No.'s 2 and 3 doubles contests. At No. 1 doubles, Lehman's team of Evauna Neville and Aurora Peters turned back Brooklyn's pair of Ruth Perez and Nadine Alexander by a score of 8-5 in an exciting match. The Bridges' Joy Rotstein and Erika Gil teamed up to defeat Lehman's duo of Gabriela Harewood and Mina Jeung by a score of 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, and at No. 3 doubles, Svetlana Khvatikova and Ogechi Egbuchulam downed Lehman's Dalia Rodriguez and Amaia Liriano, 8-0.
In singles play, Brooklyn pulled away, taking five of the six matches, including the No. 1 singles contest, where Perez took a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Neville in a highly competitive match. Lehman's lone victory came at No. 2 singles where Peters defeated Rotstein 6-4, 6-2. Brooklyn's Alexander, Gil, Khvatikova, and Egbuchulam recorded victories at No.'s 3, 4, 5, and 6 singles, respectively. Following the match, Head Coach Zack Davis gave his thoughts.
“We came to play today and we have it our best shot, but Brooklyn College was a better team,” Davis said. “I am still pleased with a lot of the things that we are doing on the court, particularly things that we didn't do well in the early stages of the season. We have one more match now before we head into the CUNYAC playoffs, and hopefully we can head into the tournament with some positive momentum.”
The Lightning return to action on Tuesday afternoon as the team takes on the John Jay College Bloodhounds at the APEX Tennis Courts, with match time scheduled for 3:30pm.
