MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM STAYS HOT, DOWNS MARINERS FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN

The Lehman College men's basketball team (7-3 Overall, 2-0 CUNYAC) continued their stellar play during the 2008-2009 season as the team captured its fifth straight victory on Saturday afternoon, downing non-conference opponent USMMA King's Point (2-5 Overall, 0-0 Landmark) by a score of 65-60 at the APEX Center in the Bronx. The Lightning used another quality balanced effort to solidify another hard-earned victory.

In the five-point victory, Lehman College led by as many 17 points before hanging on for the win. Leading the way for the squad was senior guard Duane Rhoden who scored a game-high 18 points (6-9 FG) to go along with five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore guard Xavier Garvin also contributed mightily to the win by netting 14, snatching three rebounds and tallying two steals. Senior center Alen Redzic, making his APEX Center debut, scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished five assists and swatted four shots. Finally, it was first-year standout Jonathan DeJesus dropping in 12 rebounds and snatching nine caroms. Following the victory, Head Coach Steven Schulman believed the team played a nice all-around game, but believes the team needs to finish stronger.

“We got contributions from a number of different players again, and it was very encouraging to see everybody get involved,” Schulman said. “We won the turnover battle again, and our defense was very impressive. We need to work on our free throws and we have to consistently play a full 40 minutes. We'll have a few days off and then we'll get back to work preparing for William Paterson University.”

The Lightning won the turnover battle for the 10th time this season, as Lehman forced 17 turnovers while committing 16 of their own. The squad also connected on just over 46 percent of its shots while holding the Mariners to 30.6 percent shooting.

In a losing effort for USMMA King's Point, standout Pat Grace led the way, netting 18 points, while Jon Snead also put forth a tremendous effort by netting 17, grabbing two rebounds and tallying two steals. Matt Hueber also chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.

The Lightning will return to action on Friday evening as Lehman College welcomes William Paterson University to the APEX Center, with game-time scheduled for 6:00pm.
