The Lehman College men's volleyball team (5-9 Overall, 3-6 CUNYAC) picked up a much-needed victory, defeating the Brooklyn College Bridges (2-12 Overall, 2-7 CUNYAC) by scores of 30-24, 30-28, 24-30, and 30-19 Thursday evening at the APEX Center in the Bronx, NY.
The Lightning were led by sophomore Jonathan Cruz who put forth a dominating performance on the evening, hitting .333 and tallying 17 kills to go along with 15 digs and two blocks. Teammate and junior Nate Martin also put forth a hearty effort with 13 kills, 11 digs, and two assists, and standouts RJ LeBlanc and Joseph Bodden added seven kills apiece. Setter Matthew De Tiberiis tallied a team-high 26 assists as well. Following the victory, Head Coach Daniel Skilins gave his thoughts.
“It was a win that this team needed to get to get its confidence back,” Skilins said. “Wilmy Dipre did a great job of coaching and getting the most out of the guys tonight, and I'm very proud of him. As for the players – Jonathan and Nate came up huge, and Matthew, RJ, and Joseph also didn't lose their composure. We need to stay focused heading into the stretch run of the season, and hopefully we'll play well at York on Tuesday.”
As a team, the Lightning hit .227 while the Bridges hit just .078. Lehman also tallied eight blocks on the evening compared to just two for Brooklyn.
Despite the loss for the Bridges, it was Kwan Tong Ma putting forth an extremely impressive effort as he recorded a match-high 29 kills to go along with 14 digs. Standout David Maverson also helped out with a match-high 28 assists to go along with 11 kills, 13 digs, and three service aces.
The Lightning will return to action Tuesday evening as the team travels to Jamaica, Queens to battle the York College Cardinals, with match-time scheduled for 7:00pm.
