The Lehman College men's volleyball team (8-15 Overall, 4-10 CUNYAC) won for the third time in their last four tries, defeating the Bears of St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn by scores of 30-23, 30-8, and 30-23 Wednesday evening at the APEX Center in the Bronx.
Prior to the match, Vice President for Student Affairs Jose Magdaleno, as well as Head Coach Daniel Skilins, his assistants, and the men's volleyball team took a few moments to honor a pair of special seniors who have given so much to Lehman's men's volleyball program over the years. Matt De Tiberiis and Joseph Bodden were honored, and both were presented with commemorative framed jerseys recognizing their hard work and dedication during their tenures with the team.
In the victory for the Lightning, the seniors played a big role in the win. De Tiberiis recorded team-highs of 16 assists and nine service aces, and Bodden recorded eight kills. Junior RJ LeBlanc contributed in a big way as well with 15 kills, five service aces and two solo blocks. As a team, Lehman College hit .341. Following the match, Head Coach Daniel Skilins gave his thoughts on the victory.
“We've won three out of four matches now, and I feel that little by little, we're gaining confidence,” Skilins said. “Everybody contributed tonight, and it was a nice balanced effort. I'm very proud of the guys. The presentation before the game honoring Matthew and Joe before the game was very well done, and those guys have given a lot to this program. Overall, it was a successful evening.”
Despite the loss for the Bears, Mohammed Ali Bhati put forth a solid effort with four kills, five digs, and two service aces, and Ed Han added nine assists.
The Lightning will return to action on Saturday afternoon as the team travels to Stevenson, Maryland to participate in a non conference tri-match. Lehman's first opponent will be Bard College at noon, and that will be followed by the Lightning battling the host school, Stevenson University, at 2:00pm. The matches will serve as a prelude to Lehman's CUNYAC quarterfinal round match with Hunter College, which will take place at the Hunter Sportsplex on the evening of March 24. Match-time for that contest will be at 6:00pm.
