MEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM PICKS UP FIRST VICTORY WITH FOUR-SET WIN OVER YESHIVA

The Lehman College men's volleyball team (1-2 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) picked up its first victory of the 2010 season on Thursday evening by defeating the Maccabees of Yeshiva University (2-2 Overall, 1-0 NECVA) by scores of 30-25, 30-28, 28-30, and 30-22 at the APEX Center in the Bronx.

 

In the victory for the Lightning, Nate Martin put forth a dominating performance as he tallied a match-high 25 kills to go along with a team-high 18 digs and four service aces. For the evening, he hit .228. In addition it was RJ LeBlanc adding 19 kills and recording 15 digs, and Angel Fernandez tallied a whopping 50 assists for the evening, a match-high. As a team, the Lightning hit .181 and recorded nine service aces. Following the victory, head coach Wolfgang Lucena gave his thoughts.

 

“This was a great victory for us this evening,” Lucena said. “We worked hard to build a two-set lead, and then we faced some adversity when we lost the third set, but we were able to overcome that. We certainly are getting better. This is a process, and the best is yet to come. I'm very pleased with the effort here this evening.”

 

Despite the loss for the Maccabees, it was David Kahanna tallying a team-high 17 kills and match-high 29 digs while hitting .180 on the evening. Zanvy Grauman also contributed with 16 kills, four digs and a pair of service aces, and Raphael Herskovits added 11 kills and three block assists. Finally, it was Joseph Bajtner recording a team-high 41 assists. As a team, Yeshiva University hit .177.

 

The Lightning will next take on the Hawks of Hunter College in a City University of New York Athletic Conference contest at the APEX Center, with match-time scheduled for 7:00pm.
