The Lehman College men's volleyball team (4-4 Overall, 2-2 CUNYAC) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the York College Cardinals (7-4 Overall, 3-1 CUNYAC) in five sets, 3-2 (30-24, 29-31, 19-30, 30-21 15-5), in a CUNY Athletic Conference match Tuesday evening.
Leading the way for the Lightning in the impressive victory for Lehman College was senior standout RJ LeBlanc as he led all players with a match-high 22 kills to go along with seven digs, three block assists, and two service aces. Nate Martin also put forth a tremendous effort as he tallied 18 kills while recording 10 digs and tallying six service aces. Setter Angel Fernandez piled up a match-high 42 assists, and Kelvis Castro contributed six kills and 18 digs in the victory. Following the match, Lehman College head coach Wolfgang Lucena gave his thoughts.
“This was a wonderful victory for us tonight, as we evened up our conference record at 2-2,” Lucena said. “We fell behind two sets to one, and our guys never quit. I'm very proud of the way we continued to fight even after we faced some adversity. With each passing match, I feel as though we're improving.”
Despite the loss for the Cardinals of York College, Brian Francisco recorded a team-high 11 kills, while also blocking seven shots. Aruni Piantini had 23 assists and 14 digs and Bryan Williams added nine kills and 12 digs.
The Lightning tallied 56 kills in the five sets compared to 36 for York College. Lehman also tallied 11 service aces compared to just one for the Cardinals, and the Lightning also had 52 assists while York recorded 33. The Lightning though had 51 hitting errors on the evening while the Cardinals had 36.
Lehman College will return to action Thursday evening as the Lightning will battle the Cougars of Medgar Evers College in a CUNYAC contest at the APEX Center, with match-time scheduled for 7:00pm.
