MEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM FIGHTS VALIANTLY, BUT FALLS TO CCNY BEAVERS IN FIVE SETS

The Lehman College men's volleyball team (12-8 Overall, 8-4 CUNYAC) had its four-match winning streak snapped on Tuesday evening, falling to the Beavers of the City College of New York (8-15 Overall, 5-7 CUNYAC) by scores of 30-25, 26-30, 30-23, 26-30, and 19-21 at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in upper Manhattan.

 

In a match that served as a classic, Lehman College was led by RJ LeBlanc who tallied 27 kills on the night while committing just seven errors in five sets and hitting .323. He also added 10 digs and four assists. Nate Martin also dominated with 27 kills while hitting .351 and tallying 14 digs, and Angel Fernandez tallied 57 assists. Rafael Abreu helped out with 14 digs, and Aris Ducasse chipped in with six kills and four digs. Following the match, head coach Wolfgang Lucena gave his thoughts.

 

“We fought very hard tonight, and we had control of the match, taking a 2-1 lead in sets, but ultimately we fell a little bit short tonight. We'll have a few days off and we'll shake this one off, but I believe our guys really wanted this one.”

 

Leading the way for the Beavers was Nik Sirban as he recorded 26 kills while hitting .388 on the evening and tallying 10 digs and three service aces. Matthew Ng added 21 kills, 15 digs, and three assists, and Johnson Ho helped out with 14 kills and four digs. Jonathan Aguirre had a monster evening, tallying a match-high 67 assists to go along with 12 digs and four kills.

 

The Beavers tallied 80 kills compared to 69 for the Lightning, and CCNY also had nine service aces compared to five for Lehman College, and the Beavers had 76 assists while the Lightning recorded 65.

 

Lehman will return to action on Saturday afternoon as the Lightning will take to the road to battle SUNY Maritime in non-conference action, with match-time scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
