The Lehman's men volleyball team (13-9 overall, 9-5 CUNYAC) fell to Baruch College (28-2 Overall, 14-0 CUNYAC) in a conference match by scores of 17-30, 30-26, 16-30 and 21-30 Tuesday evening at the APEX Center in the Bronx on Senior Night.
Prior to the match, the Lehman College athletic department, as well as Dr. Martin L. Zwiren and the men's volleyball coaching staff and the team's student-athletes took a few moments to honor four-year senior Horace Morris for his dedication to the program. The 5'11 middle blocker was presented with a commemorative framed jersey in a show of thanks for his tremendous service.
In the victory for the Bearcats, Baruch College was led by Sequiel Sanchez who finished the evening with a match-high of 19 kills to go along with 10 digs. Teammate Jonathan Tuwaidan helped with 16 digs while Carlos DeLeon took added 12 digs in the victory.
Despite the loss for the Lightning, junior outside hitter Nate Martin put forth a terrific performance, tallying a team-high 15 kills to go along with squad-high of 12 digs. RJ LeBlanc also performed tremendously with 13 kills while Angel Fernandez added 29 digs. Following the match, head coach Wolfgang Lucena gave his thoughts.
“I'm very proud of the energy that we showed tonight, and I'm very glad that we were able to take a set,” Lucena said. “I feel as though our confidence is extremely high right now, and I believe that we're going to ready should we face them in the CUNYAC playoffs.”
The Lightning will return to action on Thursday evening as the team travels to St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn to battle the Bears, with match-time scheduled for 7:30pm.
