The Lehman College baseball team (1-1 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) lost their home opener on Thursday evening, falling to the Panthers of Old Westbury by a score of 13-2 in non-conference action at the South Field in the Bronx. The game also marked the first contest in which the newly installed lights at Lehman College were used for baseball.
Lightning Senior Jason Caraballo got the start for Lehman College and he took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) while scattering four hits and walking seven batters in 3.1 innings of work. Denis Schwuchow pitched 4.2 innings of relief for Lehman, allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits while striking out five batters. David Gaffney also got some work in but struggled, allowing seven runs (all earned), three hits, and three walks in just 0.2 innings of action.
The Panthers used a combination of nine pitchers in nailing down the victory, and the hurlers struck out 13 batters combined. Bobby Hugli got the start and pitched a strong first two innings, striking out a pair of batters and walking two batters while allowing one hit and not allowing a run. James Huber and Frank DiMaria pitched innings three and four respectively, and both pitched perfect, scoreless innings while striking out three batters apiece. Marvin Rosario, Ryan Jarvis, William Campbell, Kevin Briffa, Jorge Hiraldo, and Alexander Villanueva combined to hurl the final six innings, combining to allow just two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out five.
Leading the way offensively for the Panthers was Albert Bevaqua who finished the evening 2-for-5 with a run scored, a grand slam homerun, and five runs batted in. Jimenez finished 1-for-2 with a homerun, a run scored, and two runs batted in.
Despite the loss for the Lightning, Jhon Comas Disla finished the night 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a run scored, and Jeremy Lopez finished 1-for-3 with a single, a run scored, and a walk.
The Lightning will return to action tomorrow afternoon as Lehman College will battle SUNYIT in a non-conference doubleheader, with the first game at the South Field scheduled for 1:00pm.
