The City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its baseball and softball award winners on Wednesday evening, and six Lehman College standouts were honored. The Lightning baseball team had a number of players receive praise, as first-year shortstop Jhon Comas Disla was named Rookie of the Year. Brian Cubero and Amadoernesto Guzman were tabbed as First Team All-Stars, and Miguel Sanchez and Jeremy Lopez were named Second Team All Stars. As for the Lightning softball squad, shortstop Kelsey Ash received Second Team praise.
Rookie of the Year Jhon Comas Disla had a terrific year for first year head coach John Foster. The Bronx, NY native played and started in 30 of Lehman College's 31 games so far this year, batting .400 (46-for-115) with 10 doubles, three homeruns, 28 runs scored, 22 runs batted in, and on-base percentage of .461, and a team-high 11 stolen bases. He also led the unit with 67 total bases.
First Team All-Stars and veterans Amadoernesto Guzman and Brian Cubero both had terrific seasons as well. Guzman played in 28 games this season and led the squad with a .427 batting average (41-for-96) while smashing four homeruns and nine doubles while driving in a team-best 32 runs. His 62 total bases were good for second-best on the squad, and his .646 slugging percentage led the unit. He also racked up 16 walks, a total for second-best on the Lightning. Brian Cubero, who turned out to the team's ace pitcher, as he started in six games for the Lightning and appeared in 10, compiling a 4-3 record while allowing just 19 earned runs in 46 innings and striking out 59 batters.
Second Team All-Stars and newcomers Jeremy Lopez and Miguel Sanchez also performed very well for the Lightning this season. Lopez played in 29 games and hit .312 (34-for-109) with 11 runs batted in and 39 total bases. He also was eight-for-eight in his stolen base attempts and was second on the team with 27 runs scored. Miguel Sanchez played in 27 games for Lehman and had a knack for coming up with clutch hits. He hit just .247 on the season but bashed a team-high five homeruns while driving in 25 runs. He also tallied five doubles and had a slugging percentage of .462. Coach Foster gave his thoughts on all of his award winners.
As for Lehman's softball team, shortstop Kelsey Ash – playing in her first and only season for the Lightning and head coach John Pisano – put forth a great year for her club. Through the season's first 31 games, Ash hit .333 (29-for-87) while posting team-highs with three homeruns, nine doubles, and a whopping 30 runs batted in. Her slugging percentage was .563 and her 49 total bases were a team-best as well.
